Vioxx (rofecoxib)
Merck & Co., Inc. announced a voluntary withdrawal of Vioxx (rofecoxib) from the U.S. and worldwide market due to safety concerns of an increased risk of cardiovascular events (including heart attack and stroke) in patients on Vioxx. Vioxx is a prescription COX-2 selective, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that was approved by FDA in May 1999 for the relief of the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis, for the management of acute pain in adults, and for the treatment of menstrual symptoms. Vioxx was later approved for the relief of the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis in adults and children.

Celebrex (celecoxib)
Pfizer—the manufacturer of the COX-2 inhibitor anti-inflammatory drug—said that certain users of Celebrex® might be at a substantially increased risk for heart attacks.
Do not take Celebrex if you:
- have had an allergic-type reaction to sulfa medicines
- have had asthma, hives or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAID medicines
- are allergic to Celebrex or to any of the ingredients in Celebrex
If you have asthma, you may have aspirin-sensitive asthma. If an aspirin-sensitive asthmatic takes aspirin it can cause severe narrowing of the airway (bronchospasm), and even death. Since this type of reaction to aspirin and other NSAID medicines have happened in aspirin-sensitive patients, aspirin-sensitive patients should not take Celebrex.
